We did it! We tracked the week, all seven days, in 30-minute blocks. Now I can tell you confidently what it is we actually do in a given "typical" week. But first, here's how we did it.
Our method was this -
1. always carry around my little pink book and a pen
2. every few hours take a moment to jot down what we've been doing
3. repeat for 7 days
4. input data into a spreadsheet and color code
Our rules were these;
1. be fairly generic with what it was we were doing (walking, tourist activity, eating, etc.)
2. only write down activities/events that we did together, any time we were apart I would write in 'personal rest' or 'separate activities'
3. I (Laura) wake up early and Jon goes to bed later, Harry has a bedtime of 10 these days - so we decided to only track time when all 3 of us are awake
And finally, here's a description of what those generic activities included;
transport included - uber rides, metro trains, boats, planes
entertainment included - movies, card games, playground, reading, lengthy talks
walk explore included - really any time we walked with no purpose other than exploring the area or perhaps walking home
tourist activities included - any ticketed event we did
personal rest included - individual screen time, running, journaling, napping
work included - school work (HP), learning Spanish (Laura), coding (Jon) and travel planning
So there it is! We spend 75% of our days together as a unit. Each day typically has 11 hours of together time. We are most often eating and least often packing. We entertain ourselves more than we work (uh-oh) and although we feel like we are waiting in lines and waiting for transport all the time, in fact, we only do that about 7 hours a week :) And you might be surprised to see we explore our destinations on foot more than we participate in tourist activities.
So what will we do with this info? Well, I do think we'll be more mindful of putting in workdays, which we've already started to do. I think we might do this again in a few months - see how / if anything changes.
So now you know! Any surprises for you?
